Product Description
Lucy McTavish has loved Daniel Brown since they were children, and he returned her feelings from the very first. His home, a farm in the English countryside, was a refuge from her unhappy childhood, his heart a shelter for her own. Daniel said they'd always be together—but that's a promise he's unable to keep....

Angry and grieving, Lucy goes to London and prepares to move on with her life. But Daniel is never far from her thoughts. Then one morning she meets a stranger in the park. The connection between them is immediate and powerful, and in the days that follow, Lucy knows Daniel has kept his promise after all.

A HEARTBEAT AWAY by Eleanor Jones
April 7, 2007

Amazon rating 4/5

"A Heartbeat Away is set in contemporary England, and narrated by Lucy McTavish. She contemplates her past with Daniel and her current relationship with Alex. (The reader is left to guess for a short while who these men are.) Lucy is currently living in London, and goes off for a run in the park. There she meets a man with whom she immediately connects - the feelings are mutual. Soon afterwards, the man witnesses Lucy being hit by a car as she crosses the street.

The car drives off, and the man goes over to see if Lucy is alive. He doesn't know her, but feels that strong connection to her. When he finds out her name, he is in shock. Lucy is taken to the hospital in a coma, and her life flashes before her. The reader goes with her into her childhood years and friendship with Daniel, a slightly older boy who takes it upon himself to protect and befriend her. Lucy grew up in a dysfunctional home in the countryside of England. Her family did not have much money, and her father was constantly in and out of her life. Her mother was mentally ill, always taking to her bed." - complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton

This book, as the others in the Everlasting Love Series, spans decades. Lucy and Daniel cultivate a friendship that goes beyond words, and their childhood memories are what will pull the reader in. It is obvious from reading the first few chapters that Lucy does not end up with Daniel, her first love, but that is what will keep the reader glued to the pages. The reader will want to find out what really happened to Lucy and Daniel, and the questions will be answered before the story is over.

While A HEARTBEAT AWAY was one of my favorites in this series so far, I don't think the story line was perfect, and readers may not buy into the conclusion. Nevertheless, tissues may be needed for that last chapter.

Lucy McTavish and Daniel Brown have loved each other since they met as children. His family farm was her escape from her unhappy home. With Daniel she felt needed and cared for and he swore he would always be there for her.

That promise proved impossible when Daniel dies in an accident. She leaves the countryside for London to escape her memories, but though she has a boyfriend in Alex, Lucy always dreams of her beloved Daniel. Not paying attention while crossing the street, Lucy is hit by a car; Ben Carlisle, whom she just met in the park, saves her life. Alex has no time for a broken girlfriend so he dumps her while Ben stays with her while she heals. Somehow Lucy knows Daniel kept his promise when he sent her Ben.

Mindful in some ways of the movie Heaven Can Wait, A HEARTBEAT AWAY is a fascinating contemporary romance starring a delightful protagonist who finds surviving her beloved undesirable until she meets a guy named Ben, whom she thinks was sent by her Daniel to her. The story line focuses on the emotions of Lucy following the tragic death of Daniel as at times she provides her inner perspective. Eleanor Jones provides a poignant character study.
